Clean Power Alliance

January 24, 2019

In December 2017, the City of Redondo Beach joined a Community Choice Aggregation program called the Clean Power Alliance. Through Community Choice Aggregation, government agencies join together to purchase or generate cleaner electricity for residents and businesses.

In October 2018, the Redondo Beach City Council selected 50% renewables as the default rate for all energy customers in the City. The 50% renewable "Clean Power" tier will be the same cost as Southern California Edison's current base rate, which contains only 34% renewables.

Through the City’s membership in the Clean Power Alliance, Redondo Beach residents and businesses are automatically being enrolled in the program. Beginning in February 2019, all residential energy customers in Redondo Beach will receive 50% of their energy from clean, renewable sources. Non-residential customers will begin service in May 2019.

Energy users will also have the choice of switching to either 36% or 100% renewable energy, or opting out of the program and returning to receiving power exclusively generated by Southern California Edison. Regardless of the option selected, Southern California Edison will continue to deliver power to homes and businesses, send one bill, and be responsible for resolving any issues with electricity service.

For more information visit www.cleanpoweralliance.org or contact Clean Power Alliance at customerservice@cleanpoweralliance.org or (888) 585-3788.

RBPD Citizen Police Academy Class - Accepting Applications for January 2019

November 15, 2018

CPA Flyer

The Redondo Beach Citizen Police Academy began in the spring of 1994. The Academy’s purpose is to provide members of the community with a working knowledge of the Police Department along with the roles and responsibilities of its police officers. The goals of the program are accomplished through lecture, hands-on training, demonstrations and a “ride along” with a police officer.

The participants will meet for three hours, one night per week for fourteen weeks, in addition to a graduation night. The information covered includes police training, SWAT, traffic, criminal investigation, K-9, gangs and narcotics. There will be an emphasis on the patrol division, since it is this unit that has the majority of public contact.

The program is part of an on-going effort to improve police-community relations. It is strongly believed that the more information that the public has about the Redondo Beach Police Department, the less likely they will be suspicious, fearful or hold any misconceptions about police operations. Many conflicts are caused simply by a lack of understanding. The graduates of the program become not only better informed, but they can take back a solid foundation of information to the community. The result is a closer and more positive relationship between the Police Department and the community it serves.

The next class will start January 2019. If you or anyone you know might be interested in participating in this program, please contact Officer Michael Diehr at his email address mike.diehr@redondo.org or by phone at (310) 379-2477 x2493. Officer Diehr will send out an application to you. Remember applications are taken on first come; first serve basis and seats are limited.

Drug Takeback Event

October 22, 2018

The City of Redondo Beach will take part in the DEA organized National Prescription Drug Take-Back campaign on Saturday, October 27, 2018. The DEA is coordinating the campaign which is a collaborative effort with state and local law enforcement agencies to collect potentially dangerous controlled substances from medicine cabinets.

Redondo Beach will have a drop off site at 200 N. Pacific Coast Highway and will operate from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. During this time, unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs will be accepted. This program is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Both prescription and over the counter drugs will be accepted and the substances do not need to be in their original container. However, illicit substances such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana, are not part of this program and will not be accepted. SHARPS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards

For questions concerning the Redondo Beach event, contact Officer Michael Diehr of the Community Services Unit at (310) 379-2477 Ext. 2493. Collection sites in every local community can be found by going to www.dea.gov.

Local Hazard Mitigation Plan

August 21, 2018

Local Hazard Mitigation Plan - Take our Survey

The City of Redondo Beach is updating its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan, or LHMP. This plan will help create a safer community for residents, businesses, and visitors. The LHMP allows public safety officials and city staff, elected officials, and members of the public understand the threats from natural and human-caused hazards in our community and be better prepared. The plan will also recommend specific actions to proactively decrease these threats before disasters occur.

To help the City develop its LHMP we are releasing an online survey asking for information about any past experiences you may have had with natural hazards (i.e. flooding, wind, earthquake, fire, etc.). The more information about natural hazards we are able to compile the more useful our LHMP will be. Click on the link below for further information and to take the survey.

Redondo Beach - Beach Renourishment Project

August 9, 2012

For the week of 10/8/2012

The replenishment operation made up some time and the onshore replenishment is complete. The barge (Paul Lee) has left Redondo Beach and the contractor will be moving equipment off of the beach today and tomorrow. Per last week’s meeting, the project is expected to be completed on October 15 and completely demobilized on October 22.

Summary
As part of U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Marina Del Rey Maintenance Dredging Project, the beach area between the Topaz and Ruby street intersections will be nourished with 75,000 cubic yards of clean sand. An additional 85,000 cubic yards of clean sand from Marina Del Rey's north entrance will also be deposited in an offshore storage site (approximately 500 yards offshore/southwest of the Topaz Street lifeguard tower) for future renourishing efforts.

The nourishment operation will include the pumping of clean sand from a barge stationed in the ocean waters through a pipe to the beach. A spreader (i.e., bull-dozer) will distribute the pumped sand along the beach within the project limits. The nourishment will occur continuously in a 24 hour period for approximately 45 days.
